Two of our beloved female bottlenose dolphins are celebrating their second birthdays soon.
Valentina, born February 15, and Bay, born three weeks later, are at optimal health and vitality. Let’s catch up with them!
WHAT THEY’RE LIKE
Valentina is full of playful energy. She’s highly engaged in her environment and spends lots of time interacting with her toys. One of her favorite things to do is toss a fish and race seagulls to catch it. Bay, on the other hand, is more task-oriented, always alert and focused on the next signal from her behaviorist. Not surprisingly, they both enjoy daily rubdowns.
WHAT THEY’RE LEARNING
Dolphins are very intelligent, and Valentina and Bay are no exception. The calves swim in the same lagoon as their mothers, sisters and other pod members and mimic behaviors they see in the older dolphins. They interact with guests in our Flukes & Flippers program, which highlights the development of our young animals, and frequently compete for attention during sessions where only one calf is required.
WHAT THEY’RE EATING
The calves are still nursing and get much of their nutritional requirements from their mothers. They also eat a variety of fish, like herring and mullet, packed with vitamins and minerals important for their growth. Like all our animals, the calves’ diets are carefully planned by a marine nutritionist.
Dolphin Cay is one of the world’s premiere dolphin habitats, featuring 6 million gallons of clean-filtered, natural seawater flowing through 11 interconnected lagoons and a natural sand bottom. The habitat is also home to more than 20 different species of marine life and encourages dolphins to explore and interact, making it one of the most enriching zoological environments possible. Atlantis is an AZA-accredited facility and a world leader in marine mammal care and husbandry.
With the addition of the new calves, Dolphin Cay is now home to 36 bottlenose dolphins.
We are proud to announce that Atlantis has been recognized once again with prestigious AZA accreditation, reflecting the highest standards of animal care and our long-standing commitment to conservation, education, and research endeavors.
