The History of Atlantis
25 Years of Paradise Magic

For more than two decades, Atlantis — best known for exuding Bahamian culture, serving as a marvel and custodian of marine life, and its landmark pink architecture — has paved the way for luxury, hospitality, and entertainment in the Caribbean and around the world. Now the resort is raising the bar even higher by embarking upon a new chapter with an array of massive upgrades and striking enhancements.

Somewhere Else Opens

American musician Pharrell Williams and David Grutman of Groot Hospitality will partner with Atlantis to open a new resort. The Somewhere Else resort to be located at what was the Beach Tower is set to offer “a unique and immersive experience” in The Bahamas. Somewhere Else will reportedly feature over 400 guest rooms and suites alongside an array of vibrant, top-tier dining venues, lushly landscaped grounds, multiple pools and recreation areas, luxury amenities, and live entertainment.

The Cove Renovation

The Cove relaunch brought two restaurants — one led by Bahamian Chef Julie Lightbourn and one by renowned Master Chef José Andres, a newly designed poolscape and cabana sanctuary designed by Lulu DK and a soul-stirring art installation created by Antonius Roberts.

The ultra-luxury property is elegantly situated between Cove and Paradise Beaches, creating the feeling of being cast away on a private, white-sand sanctuary. The Cove features an open-air lobby, sensual suites and super suites, dining, bespoke amenities and purposeful service delivered with Bahamian warmth.

The Cove and The Reef Opened & Aquaventure and Marine Habitats Expanded

Following a decade of success, Atlantis continued its growth as Kerzner International embarked on a third phase of development with its approximately $1 billion expansion in 2007. The expansion included The Cove, a luxurious 600-room resort within the resort; The Reef, a 497-key condo-hotel; Dolphin Cay, a 14-acre dolphin habitat and education center; Aquaventure, a 63-acre addition to Atlantis’ waterscape; Aura, a nightclub from the operators of Hakkasan Group; approximately 100,000 additional square feet of conference facilities, which created the largest conference space in the Caribbean; and the 30,000-square-foot Mandara Spa.

The Royal Towers and Casino Opened

A major architectural achievement of arches, domes, and spires, flanked by soaring towers that appear to have arisen from the sea, based on the myth that inspired them. Millions of dollars were spent commissioning museum-quality art from renowned artists from Europe, Africa, The Bahamas, and the United States. The Caribbean’s largest casino was also built in the Royal Towers, containing millions of dollars in art.

Atlantis Development Begins

Sol Kerzner created the mythical city of Atlantis from the ground up — or, more accurately, from the seabed to the skies. More than $800 million was spent to bring to life the myth and legend of the lost city of Atlantis. The original scope and scale of the project were mind-boggling: the world’s largest open-air marine environment of 11 million gallons, home to 50,000 sea creatures representing 200 species; new lagoons and countless waterfalls; a spectacular Mayan Temple Waterslide complex; 6 swimming areas and a $15 million Marina.

Sol Kerzner Purchased Resorts International

This once-popular jet-set playground on Paradise Island had seen better days, but from the start, Kerzner saw its potential. Struck by the beauty of the location, on a lush tropical island with a pristine two-mile white sand beach, Kerzner vowed to build the most engaging and astounding resort the world had ever seen.
