POD Stories

Dolphin Cay is a must-visit on your Atlantis bucket list for an unforgettable Bahamian experience. This world-famous attraction is one of the largest and most sophisticated marine-mammal habitats in the world.

You may think that all bottlenose dolphins look and act alike, but each dolphin is a unique individual with distinct traits, preferences, and characteristics. The shape of their dorsal fins and tail flukes can be used for identification, like human fingerprints.

Jonah

Jonah is one of our most energetic, mature males. He’s lovable, a leader in his pod, and eager to learn.

Jonah, born 1999, enjoys learning new things and has a wide range of behaviors. He likes to race other dolphins across the lagoon and his behaviorists think he loves to win!

Jonah rode out Hurricane Katrina, sheltered in a swimming pool at the Seaway Inn with Katelyn.

Elijah

Elijah was washed into the Gulf of Mexico by the storm surge during Hurricane Katrina, and was the last dolphin rescued. Known as the “instigator” because of his youthful antics, Elijah can be a handful for behaviorists. He tends to have a short attention span, but when he is focused, he’s a fast learner.

The marine mammal team must be creative, varying the behaviors to maintain Elijah’s attention and to keep him active. He is small in size with big eyes, and he has a dorsal fin that is rippled on the backside.

Echo

Referred to as “the gentleman,” Echo is easy going, attentive and enthusiastic.

He loves nuzzling up to his marine mammal specialists and new friends for rubdowns. Echo is incredibly strong and is one of the heaviest males at Dolphin Cay, as well as one of the highest jumpers.

He is adept at aerials, soaring through the air often and with great ease. At 38 years old, he is the oldest and most dominant male in the pod.

To recognize Echo, look for a dark face, marks on his rostrum, and two distinct notches on the tip of his dorsal fin. He also has a tiny pink scar on his right pectoral flipper where it joins with his body.

Brewer

Brewer arrived at Dolphin Cay in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home.

Now 26 years old and thriving under the care of our marine mammal specialists, his enthusiasm makes him an “A” student in his training sessions.

He is light gray with dark “stripes” on his side called blazes. Brewer also likes to blow bubble rings in the water to impress the other animals!

Naia

Meet, Naia, one of the original dolphins who came to Dolphin Cay the year it opened in 2007. Naia now lives together in a pod with Toni and Tamra, who were rescued after hurricane Katrina destroyed their home.

Every dolphin is different, and each has its own distinct personality. This is certainly true of Naia, the playful dolphin who often greets guests with clicks and whistles. Be on the lookout for Naia on your next visit!
