Smalltooth sawfish were once found throughout the Atlantic Ocean but the dwindling population is now found only in Florida and The Bahamas.
Habitat destruction from development along their nearshore water habitats and entanglement in fishing nets are the biggest threats to their survival.
In 2012, Atlantis, Paradise Island became the first and only facility in the world to successfully breed and raise smalltooth sawfish, a critical step in helping to save this singular species.
The two male and two female juvenile sawfish reside in The Ruins outside Royal Towers and the four adult sawfish, with their distinctive long saw-like rostrum and measuring more than 12 feet in length, are easy to spot from the Predator Tunnel at Predator Lagoon.
International Sawfish Day is celebrated on October 17 and was established as a collaboration between the Sawfish Species Survival Plan (SSP) of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) as well as research and conservation organizations to highlight endangered sawfish and the challenges they face in our world's oceans.
