Veterinarian Amanda Pinder

Say hello to Amanda Pinder, the veterinarian who cares for our dolphins and sea lions at Dolphin Cay. Amanda also treats the hundreds of stranded, sick and injured animals rescued and transported to Atlantis each year.

We asked Amanda three questions about her typical workday at Dolphin Cay.

What’s a typical day for you?

We operate the largest animal rescue and rehabilitation hospital in
the Caribbean, so on any given day we’re caring for injured and sick animals who need our help. Some days I’m in surgery, other days I’m overseeing their treatment and rehabilitation plans. Our whole team is focused on getting these animals healthy again so they can be returned to the wild.

Of course, I’m also caring for the animals who live at Dolphin Cay, most of whom were rescued themselves. I start every day doing morning rounds, and I like to get here early so I can observe the animals in their natural element. I also talk with the behaviorists every day, because they spend the most time with the animals and can help identify any concerns.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

Vets love animals, and I’m no exception. I love seeing them do well and thriving in their environments. Vets are also very good at solving puzzles. Animals can’t tell you what’s going on, so you have to use your training and experience to troubleshoot the issue. And I never want to put our animals in stressful situations, so we run diagnostics and conduct non-invasive tests to help us figure out what’s going on. It’s a challenge, and I love every minute.

What brought you to Dolphin Cay?

I’m native Bahamian and grew up in Nassau, so Atlantis is truly home for me. From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with animals, although in college I was discouraged from becoming a vet because the field was too “competitive.” I’m so glad I didn’t listen! I earned a bachelor’s degree in Animal Biology from the University of Florida and went on to veterinary school in California. I moved back to Nassau to begin my own practice, and started volunteering at Dolphin Cay on my days off. Last October, I became the full-time veterinarian here.

Bonus: What’s something people might be surprised to
learn about you?

I was captain of University of Florida’s competitive horseback riding team.
