The Indiana Hoosiers have clinched five National Championships in men's basketball, with titles in 1940, 1953, 1976, 1981, and 1987. The 1976 Hoosiers remain the last undefeated NCAA men's basketball champions. This feat has stood unmatched in college basketball history.
In 2021, former Indiana basketball standout Mike Woodson returned to his alma mater as the 30th head coach of the IU basketball program.
Woodson, who played for the Hoosiers under coach Bob Knight, led the 1979-80 Hoosiers to a conference title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament's Sweet Sixteen.
After being drafted by the New York Knicks as the 12th pick of the 1980 NBA draft, Woodson played 11 seasons in the NBA and later embarked on a coaching career, including head coaching stints with the Atlanta Hawks and the New York Knicks.
Indiana's passion for basketball dates to the game's inventor, Dr. James Naismith. Although Naismith created basketball in Massachusetts in 1891, he quickly saw how the sport thrived in Indiana.
In 1925, after witnessing Indiana’s high school tournament, he remarked, "While the game was invented in Massachusetts, basketball really had its origin in Indiana, which remains the center of the sport." Icons like Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson, and John Wooden all hail from Indiana.
