Manatees Make a Home in The Bahamas

The West Indian manatee has long been considered a rare visitor to Bahamian waters. But according to our conservation partner, the Perry Institute for Marine Science, there were multiple sightings of several manatees this fall. An adult manatee was spotted near the Montague public dock and a second adult and her nursing calf were seen near Spanish Wells, Eleuthera. A mother-baby duo isn’t just heartwarming, it’s meaningful. It signals calm waters, reliable food and the kind of peace a slow-moving marine mammal needs to raise the next generation.

Manatees and Mermaids

Here’s a fun fact: sailors once mistook manatees for mermaids. In fact, they are part of the “Sirenia” zoological order, which comes from the word “siren,” a sea creature from Greek mythology whose beautiful songs lured sailors to shipwreck.

Conservation Helpers

Scientists view manatees as underwater groundskeepers. They are strict vegetarians, eating for five to eight hours and consuming about 32 pounds of plants each day! Their steady appetite helps keep seagrass meadows trimmed and healthy, which supports fisheries, protects coastlines and stores carbon.

A Vulnerable Species

Make no mistake: manatees are quite vulnerable and are protected by federal and international legislation. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums warns that boat strikes, habitat loss and poor water quality continue to pose real threats. Manatees move slowly, surface often, and don’t always hear boats coming, all of which contributes to manatee deaths in busy waterways.

A Spark of Hope

Manatees in Bahamian waters is a story of progress and an invitation to us all: Slow down on the water. Give wildlife space. Protect seagrass wherever it grows. With an abundance of care and awareness, we can protect these gentle giants for as long as they call The Bahamas home.
