We Love Our Educators
Int'l Day of Zoo & Aquarium Educators

On November 14, zoos and aquariums around the globe pay homage to their education teams. At Atlantis, our team is led by Marine Education and Programs Officer Kristen Johnson. We asked Kristen what it’s like to work at Atlantis and she didn’t disappoint!

Kristen, what do you do?

Something different every day! I work with schools, not-for-profit groups and charitable organizations to share what we do to save animals and protect and preserve our oceans. I also work closely with our marine animal teams to ensure the information they share with guests is accurate, consistent and relevant.

What education programs do you offer?

We offer dozens of marine animal experiences and each one is a learning opportunity. We also provide educational tours for K-12 and college students to reinforce what they’re learning in the classroom. Educators and interns visit our facilities to gain hands-on experience in the marine biology field. And we’re participating in a newly launched, resort-wide paid internship program called TIDE.

What animals are people most fascinated by?

People are obsessed with turtles! Sharks and dolphins are tied for second. But I always tell guests to visit our stingrays. We have several types of rays, including cownose, spotted eagle and a magnificent manta ray named Kronos. Rays are really curious animals and so fun to observe.

What surprises students the most?

I’m grateful that most already know how warming oceans affect animal habitats. But they don’t necessarily know how healthy coral reefs and mangroves support our own survival. We teach them how these habitats are vast ecosystems that support fish, mollusks, shrimp and many other seafood we consume. Without reefs, an important global food source disappears. That definitely gets their attention!
