A SAFE HARBOR IN PARADISE

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina displaced 17 dolphins and 12 sea lions from their home in Gulfport, Mississippi when the storm destroyed their facility. During the storm, 8 of the 17 dolphins were washed out to sea during the traumatic event and the effort to rescue them was daunting, but successful. This event set in motion the official opening of Dolphin Cay where all ultimately found a safe haven in what is now one of the most spectacular open-air marine life habitats in existence.

MORE REASON TO CELEBRATE

Believe it or not, Dolphin Cay at Atlantis Paradise Island celebrates its 15th  anniversary in 2022! What many may not know is that Dolphin Cay opened in 2007 following Hurricane Katrina’s destruction hundreds of miles away and represents the silver lining for its rescued inhabitants.

To commemorate this anniversary, award-winning wildlife and conservation  author Georgeanne Irvine wrote the book “Hurricane Katrina Dolphins: From Rescue to Paradise” which tells the moving story of these dolphins and their inspirational journey to Atlantis where they thrive today as ambassadors of the ocean to visitors of all ages. It’s a must-read and is sold exclusively at the resort. Come get your copy!

Note: A portion of the proceeds will go to the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation to help continue its commitment to foster the preservation and conservation of sea species and their extraordinary habitats throughout the Bahamas and surrounding Caribbean seas.
