GET TO KNOW CHEF BROWN

REDEFINING SOUL FOOD AND GULLAH CUISINE

Chef Kardea Brown, an Emmy-nominated host of Food Network’s Delicious Miss Brown, blends traditional Gullah cuisine with modern twists, honoring her South Carolina roots. Known for her vegetable-forward Southern dishes, she’s redefining soul food and showcasing the rich heritage of the Gullah people through her culinary journey.

From Charleston’s Lowcountry to Emmy-Nominated Chef

Kardea Brown’s story begins in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina, where she grew up in the Gullah Geechee community.

The Gullah community formed when West Africans arrived in the Lowcountry as slaves, and developed a cuisine born of necessity, making use of local ingredients harvested from land and sea. It was through her grandmother that Kardea learned and tasted the traditional foods of her ancestry. While dedicated to preserving her culinary roots and sharing the history of her culture, Kardea also began to infuse newer flavors that reflect her innate flair for cooking and exploration of diverse influences.

Today, she’s an Emmy-nominated chef and the host of Food Network’s Delicious Miss Brown, where she takes viewers on a flavorful journey through her family’s heritage with a modern twist.

New Gullah Supper Club

Before becoming a household name, Kardea brought her heritage to life with the New Gullah Supper Club, a pop-up dinner series that captured the essence of her Lowcountry roots. The series quickly gained traction, eventually leading to her own show, Delicious Miss Brown

Known for her vegetable-forward take on Southern classics, Kardea is redefining what modern Southern cuisine looks like—mixing traditional Gullah ingredients with her own creative flair.

The Way Home

Kardea’s cookbook, The Way Home, brings her Gullah-inspired recipes into kitchens across the country. “Gullah” and “GeeChee” refer to a distinct group of African Americans living in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia who have preserved much of their West African language, culture, and cuisine. This New York Times bestseller celebrates her family’s heritage with a blend of Southern and West African flavors, showing how soul food is anything but one-dimensional.

“Gullah people laid the foundation for Southern cooking. Before farm-to-table was a fad, it was what Gullah people did,” Kardea explains. “I want to show the world that soul food is not monolithic. It’s so much more than fried chicken and vegetables cooked in pork. It’s seasonal, fresh and delicious!”
